What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website asks your browser to store on your device, so they can be sent back to the same website on your next visit. Each one records at least the domain that set it, how long it lasts, an identifier and a value. Similar technologies, such as local storage, pixels and device fingerprinting, work differently but are treated the same way by the rules below.
The rules that apply
In the United Kingdom, cookies are governed by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR), alongside the UK GDPR. Regulation 6 of PECR requires your consent before anything is stored on or read from your device, with one exception: storage that is strictly necessary to provide a service you have explicitly requested.
Where consent is required, it has to meet the UK GDPR standard: a clear affirmative action, freely given, and as easy to refuse as it is to give. Pre-ticked boxes, implied consent from continued browsing, and "accept" buttons without an equally prominent "reject" do not qualify.
Categories of cookies
Strictly necessary. Cookies without which the site cannot do what you have asked of it: keeping a session open, balancing server load, protecting against attacks, or remembering the cookie choice you have just made. These are the only ones exempt from consent, although we still have to tell you about them.
Preferences. Cookies that remember choices such as language or region. Useful, but not strictly necessary, so they require consent.
Analytics. Cookies that measure how many people visit and which pages they read. The ICO treats analytics as non-essential: they improve the service for us, rather than delivering a service you asked for, so they require consent before they are set. This is true whether the analytics are run by us or by a third party, and whether or not the data is aggregated.
Advertising and tracking. Cookies that build a profile of your interests to target advertising, often across different websites. These require consent, and the information given before consent has to name the parties involved.
Cookies used on this site
This is an informational website. It sets no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and has no comments, accounts, newsletter or embedded content from other platforms. The only cookie set is the one that records your own cookie choice, which is strictly necessary and therefore does not itself require consent.

Our hosting provider may also set short-lived technical cookies for load balancing or security. They last no longer than the session, do not identify you, and are not used for any profiling purpose.
If analytics or any other non-essential cookie is added to this site in future, this page will be updated and your consent will be requested before it is set.
Fonts loaded from Google
These pages load their typefaces from Google Fonts, operated by Google Ireland Ltd. The service sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, so PECR does not apply to it. It does, however, mean your IP address reaches Google's servers when the page loads. That processing is described in our Privacy Policy, and in Google's privacy policy.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Your browser lets you delete cookies already stored and block new ones. The official instructions are here:
Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of a website working. On this site it will not prevent you from reading any of the content.
Other websites
Links on this site may take you to websites run by other organisations, which set their own cookies under their own policies. We have no control over them and act only as a technical intermediary.
